Bladder leakage (aka urinary incontinence) affects one in three women and one in five men, often as a result of surgery, childbirth or other trauma.
So why don’t we ever hear about it? Why are we afraid of talking about one of the most common medical conditions affecting people around the world today?
Approximately one in five men and one in three women will experience unwanted leaks at some point during their lives, and up to 90 percent of those will never ask for help. But
is manageable and can be treated – you don’t have to accept it as a normal part of life, even in old age.
Incontinence can be experienced by anyone at any age, but is particularly common in women after childbirth and during menopause, in men after prostate cancer treatment, and in the elderly.
Anyone who’s experienced incontinence knows that it can be a blow to your self-confidence. We grow up being told that only children can’t control their bladder, so if incontinence strikes in adulthood it goes against what we have grown up being told is normal.
For some people, fear of an incident leads to them restricting their lifestyle. Some plan their day around access to bathrooms, curtail their travel plans and give up activities they love. For older folks, incontinence can even lead to unnecessary admission to long-term care.
Although we are becoming more open about the problem, there’s still a long way to go. When actor Kate Winslet sat on Graham Norton’s couch and proclaimed: “Incontinence is bloody awful!” many women around the world cheered. If someone as elegant and respected as Kate can open up about her experiences, why can’t everyone else?
